When Jet Lag Keeps You Up

There are two things that cannot be separated from the life I live as an entrepreneur – the constant travelling and staying connected. I’ve been very fortunate to have spent time in some of the world’s most desirable locations and to have made friends along the way.
Because my work can take me anywhere in the world at any given moment; this might mean I’ll receive a late night email from Tokyo, a personal message from a friend in London, or an event invitation to come to Los Angeles. Depending on the urgency, they may want a reply as soon as possible and if my schedule is clear, I’ll be packing up my suitcase in preparation for the next flight out.
But what does that mean for my sleep?
Jet lag has always been omnipresent and it has nagged at my ability to sleep comfortably more times that I can remember. One of the hardest times is always during and after my annual trips to Tokyo, Japan. The thirteen hour time difference and the energy it takes to travel to my destination can really take a toll on my sleep.
When I’m at home and have trouble disconnecting before bed; I usually meditate for an hour. However, whenever I’m in a new city, especially Tokyo, my days are a lot longer than usual. Which means that fatigue would drag me right to bed but it doesn’t always translate to a great night’s sleep either. A key travel companion that I always pack is ZzzQuil – it helps ease me into sleep and refreshed for a full day of exploration. It also helps me when jet lag keeps me up at home and when need to re-adjust to my day-to-day routine.
Besides the jet lag, there are persistent theories that suggest that staying off your devices before bedtime will substantially improve your ability to fall asleep. However, in my line of work, it’s tough to disconnect. When I’m at home and I have trouble sleeping before bed; I usually meditate for an hour but I’m right back on my phone afterwards.
For the next couple of days, I’ll be changing up my routine. After my meditation, I’ll be stepping away from my phone and go to bed instead. ZzzQuil has asked me to practice this routine and to take one of their nighttime liquicaps sleep-aids shortly before I tuck myself in. I can’t wait to let you guys know how ZzzQuil helps me get a good night’s rest!
