My Life: Marcus Troy ‘s AW77 Hoody
August 24th, 2010

In the early 2000′s customization was the big thing. A lot of people took it upon themselves to recreate, remix, deconstruct already existing products. Some people even became famous for their “Remixes” like Dr. Romanelli, Sabotage and guys like Methamphibian. These guys became so popular that companies started hiring these guys for legit collaborations. Maybe that was the slow death of DIY’s (do it yourself) or maybe it was the evolution. Companies started smelling the DIY trend and started offering programs to consumers like Nike ID, The Bespoke program and Converse customization just to capitalize on the growing need for ones own unique piece. I believe Vans was one of the early adopters of the DIY & consumer experience.
I don’t think much people are paying much attention to the guy on the block painting sneakers these days, I feel that type of DIY is pretty much finish. The evolution has become company sanctioned DIY’s projects like what happened at OTH a couple weeks ago. Nike invited me down to the shop to customize my own AW77 Hoody which you can see above. I wanted to do a bit more but time was not on my side, I was only able to get a few patches on but I still love it. It really feels like mines!
I love this post, I guess because I am a bit biased because it is the profession I am in. I run a small company called Dream Design out of Toronto that specializes in creating a completely customized garment from start to finish with your own personal artwork or we can design it for you. You can bring in your own garment or we can supply fashionable items for you. We provide complete 1 off services with Varsity jackets, t-shirts, Sweaters, Hats and more personalized with embroidered logo, screen printed phrases / graphics, or even vinyl patterns.
Custom is such a great thing but it is a service that has been over shadowed by the lack of quality. I would love it if we could do something for you guys to showcase what a true Dream Design custom product is all about.
[...] Custom lives on! In a world of fashion over saturated with the same trends, colours, and silhouettes OTH Montreal has given us a breath of fresh air! The culture of custom apparel has been around since the 80′s underground in Harlem where you could find Mike Tyson, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim and more splurging on these one off designer jackets to be DIFFERENT. Fashion was a sport back then, where you would want to outshine all your opponents with your exclusivity and originality. OTH Montreal played host to the Nike Sportswear Event featuring the the AW77 sweater where you could personalize it with your own touch. I personally love this concept even if it’s only the personalized touch that’s your style. You will still have a garment like none other! “I was only able to get a few patches on but I still love it.
