Men’s fashion expert and Maverick mason Marcus Troy

Men’s fashion blogger Marcus Troy has been consulting and collaborating on many major projects in 2010. NY Luxury Fashion Examiner Katie Change recently got the chance to chat with him concerning past projects including his collaboration with Ronnie Fieg on the Nexus Project, as well as his most recent project that he launched with Nike, the Mavericks Project. The Mavericks Project is tearing up Twitter and flooding the mainstream with positivity.

For those of you who own an iPhone, you can download his application, the Marcus Troy App (for free!), so you can always be connected.

After seeing how much attention this project garnered on social networking outlets, the decision was made to shed some serious light on Marcus Troy and his endeavors in fashion, blogging, and inspiring the public to connect and participate in the Mavericks Project. The site is not only an inspiration but it may just be the lock-and-key format to success in surrounding yourself with the right people on your journey to becoming a maverick yourself. This is a profile of Marcus Troy, Maverick mason.

You recently collaborated with Ronnie Fieg and Sebago boat shoes on the Nexus Project. I know this must have been an incredible journey for you. Could you tell us a little bit about why the project was so special to you? It was definitely an exciting journey because I was allowed to work with a lot of talented individuals on this project. To be able to implement my thoughts and tastes into a classic brand and silhouette was pretty incredible, being able to change what traditionally has been in the marketplace and to put it at my taste level, it was a great journey.

If you had one word to describe your shoe, what would it be? Diffused luxury. Traditionally, the word “diffuse” means reducing the tension or removing the tension.  A friend of mine named Jason Burke coined that phrase a long time ago and it has always stuck with me. I feel like this shoe has its luxury elements, but it’s really diffused because its affordable luxury. It looks great, it looks rich, it looks expensive, and has all the elements and sensibilities of what luxury is, but that explosiveness of luxury is kind of removed. The perception is “luxurious” but affordable and attainable. The quality of the leather and the red bottom with the gold highlights around the shoe, and the color scheme creates a rich appearance.

If you could name one celebrity personality you would like to see rocking your shoes, that you think achieves the look you were going for when you created this shoe, who would it be? Harry Belafonte or Sammy Davis Jr.

Lets talk a little bit about your most recent project, the “Nike Mavericks Project.” What do you hope to achieve with this project? I want to tell a story, many stories of people that Nike has identified as mavericks; but I also want to engage my readers and have them explain and express their stories, feelings and attitudes about being a maverick, becoming a maverick or mavericks they admire.  I really want people to be inspired.  I would like to get people talking about their goals and things they want to achieve and their aspirations. I think it is really important to hear and listen to the voices of the consumers, of the people who subscribe to everything that we do in this lifestyle. The people sharing within this digital space are going to be the next people we look up to, or that we will want to learn about. If we are able to document their stories today, four or five years from now when they become big or distinguished this will serve as mini-timeline.

Think back and ask, if Ralph Lauren wrote down twenty or thirty years ago that he wanted to become this great men’s designer with a company worth millions of dollars, If we could have been able to see all of that and read it, how inspiring would that have been? I also wanted to create a platform for individuals to be able to express, share, learn and connect with other people. There are a lot of people that have made friends and connected with others because of the site. This site also serves as a cultural conduit.

What are the three main influences/inspirations in your life that you attribute your success to thus far? My father who has been instrumental in shaping my thoughts and worldviews. My other inspiration would be my twin brother who keeps me sharp and on my toes, and finally, the people that I love who around me. These people influence me and are the inspirations that keep me going. They keep me up at night.

How do you hope to expand on the Mavericks project? I would like to expand on the Mavericks Project by creating a book.  I want to publish the book, and the whole campaign into something tangible so that we can really document these individuals and their stories.

Why is the Mavericks Project special? To my knowledge, nothing like this has been done before online where we are able to hear stories from everyday people who are always consuming and participating in the things we put out there in the world. We now have a chance to hear from them, about what they think and like.  They can promote themselves, their movements and their brands. They get to tell their side of the story.

As a lifestyle blogger, taste-maker and cultural conduit, you are able to use your blog as a vehicle to facilitate positive changes in many ways.  What kind of effect do you think the Mavericks Project is having on your readers? My readers are grateful to Nike Sportswear and myself for giving them a platform where they can read about running mavericks, influential people around the globe and it gives them the opportunity to share their story. It has changed them because they have started following and meeting other people on the site. It is an inspirational educational exchange.

What has blogging done for you?  What are you doing to shape the blogging community? Blogging has allowed me to connect with various people from around the world. It has made the world so much   smaller. Blogging has also maintained my philosophies of being a global citizen. It has taken me around the world. To shape the blogging community I am mentoring new bloggers and I am creating websites where new bloggers can get their start with a plan and a platform that has already been built.

What is your must-have for Spring 11? Superfresh raincoats and umbrellas.

What can we expect from you in 2011? In 2011, I am working on the Marcus Troy Experience in the Bahamas with Nautica, where I am going to be bringing 2-4 readers with me that will explore the island and resorts and things of that nature. I am bringing people into my world as a lifestyle blogger.

Who is Marcus Troy? Marcus Troy is a cultural participant, a cultural conduit, a storyteller and a person that likes to share his experiences.
