Chicken and waffles is the epitome of American comfort food and debates can rage on about where is the place to get best plate in town. There is a misconception that the savoury dish originated from the south but we learned from John Seymour, co-founder of Sweet Chick restaurant in New York City that it originated from Harlem in the early 20th century. The restaurant he heads is responsible for serving up some of the best chicken in the city has to offer.
Upon learning this piece of history himself, he was inspired to open up Sweet Chick’s first location in 2013 on Bedford Ave in Brooklyn, and its resounding success lead to a second location opening up across the Williamsburg Bridge on the Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, a year and a half later.
With the help of his Executive Chef, Lawrence Duda, they have developed a strong chicken and waffle dish. The chicken is soaked for 24-hours in their signature sweet tea brine and it is double dredged so that it can have an extra crispy exterior. Meanwhile, their waffles come in different flavours starting with classic, bacon-cheddar, dried cherry, rosemary-mushroom, apple cinnamon or spiced-pecan. We lunched at their Ludlow location and had the chance to try out some of their dishes. We enjoyed their mac and cheese, fried chicken sandwich and of course, chicken and waffles. Their waffle is the best we’ve ever had so far and the chicken was cooked perfectly. We’re looking forward to coming back to try other dishes on the menu!
To avoid being pigeonholed as strictly chicken and waffle joint, they have also developed other dishes on the menu that shows off their culinary aspirations. On any given night you can find seafood or beef on the menu and it is all prepared with the same comfort food approach but at an elevated level. As John puts it himself “People don’t want average food, so we want to make sure we are on point and producing a dope product.”
