News: Localeur iPhone App: A First Look @localeur
The best ways to experience new cities is through the eyes of a local. When I visit new cities, I make sure to reach out to friends, and the same is true when they come to my city and want to bypass the tourist traps.
At South by Southwest this March, Localeur, a startup I invested in earlier this year, was named one of the best web apps of the interactive conference for doing just that. I hung out with co-founder and CEO Joah Spearman at the ESPN X Games in Aspen last January where he initially shared Localeur with me, and he and his co-founder Chase White have had quite a busy year since. Since March, they’ve expanded the Localeur community to five of my favorite US cities: Austin, Houston, L.A., New York and San Francisco. They plan to launch a dozen more cities between the US & Canada in 2014.
With each new city, Localeur puts more local insight in your hands with recommendations from a select group of local insiders who share their favorite places to eat, drink, shop, workout, etc. In Austin, for example, a SXSW Music festival staffer contributes her favorite locales; in New York, DJ Mick contributes Brooklyn recs; while in San Francisco, community managers for startups like AirBnB and EventBrite contribute to give you a feel for who they’re working with.
Localeur’s debut iPhone app, previewed here, launches this December and will give you on-the-go access to insider tips from locals. You’ll now be able to save the money from travel guidebooks and hours from sites like Yelp.
Where to take dates in the Bay? Where to work remotely in Austin? Where to juice in Brooklyn? It’s all there with new recs each day. The app will also help you sift through which of your Facebook friends are worth following to see what places they like in Localeur cities. One of the cool features you can expect on the app will be switching between travel and local mode for push notifications in case you know one city better than others. Experiencing cities the way locals do is now more possible than ever.
Considering their fast growth and the fact that Google sought them out for a partnership just two months after Localeur launched this spring, I’d say this is a startup you’ll want to monitor closely. I’ll update you via Twitter and Instagram when the iPhone app is available in the App Store this December.
