News: Andre Iguodala Is Named Men’s Wear Style Director For Twice @andre
Twice, a secondhand clothing e-commerce platform, has tapped NBA All-Star Andre Iguodala to serve as men’s wear style director. The Golden State Warriors shooting guard and former Olympian met Twice founders Calvin Young and Noah Ready-Campbell through Ben Horowitz, a venture capitalist who has invested in the site and jumped on board. “Joining a revolutionary e-commerce platform has been a goal of mine since I moved to the Bay Area, and I look forward to helping Twice fuel their tremendous growth,” said Iguodala, whose role is effective today.
Along with being a brand ambassador, Iguodala will oversee the direction of Twice’s men’s marketplace and have an undisclosed equity stake in the company as compensation for his role. His duties include choosing seasonal and themed look books and helping create original content, which will include a video shot inside his closet that highlights how Twice works. Shoppers can also expect limited-edition Twice “shops,” selling the 6-foot, 6-inch player’s former clothes.
Young and Ready-Campbell, both former Google employees, wanted to build a better eBay and launched Twice with women’s wear in 2012. Users can send in gently worn clothing and Twice staffers will photograph and list the items in its marketplace. Similar to the consignment model, sellers receive a percentage of the purchase price. The site features mostly mass-market brands such as J. Crew, Gap and Banana Republic.
Although the men’s section launched earlier this year, Ready-Campbell said it has proved popular and already accounts for 10 percent of Twice’s revenues. The Oakland-based start-up is not yet profitable, but the company has raised $23 million since launching and is in its Series C funding round.
Iguodala is the latest NBA player to work with fashion e-commerce start-ups. Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade teamed up with luxury consignment site The RealReal last year on a temporary sale that featured the player’s designer duds. Similarly, Russell Westbrook, who recently signed on as True Religion’s campaign creative director, partnered with men’s flash sale site JackThreads in November on an exclusive collection of sunglasses from Westbrook Frames, the All-Star’s eyewear brand.
