  • My Thoughts: Failure by Marcus Troy

I did an interview recently where I said that failure is an integral part of life. A few people took that quote and tweeted it multiple times, but I felt like it was empty and did not mean much without context. I decided to take this opportunity to expand a bit on what I meant.

My father always told me that we never plan to fail but we fail to plan. I never really knew what he meant until a few years ago, when I found myself just breezing through life without any defined plan. I believe you can make all the plans in the world, but your path is truly written. It just depends which book you decided to finish.

Have you ever watched a movie and wished there was an alternate ending? You sometimes find yourself watching the same movie time and time again, wishing it finished differently? I think we’ve even tricked ourselves into believing that this time Tony Montana doesn’t die in the end. What if our lives were written like a movie, but it really had two endings? At birth, you were given two scripts and depending on which one you chose, that’s how your life would end up. The only catch is you never know which script you’ll get.

I often ask myself: can we avoid failure? Can we give up on one script and manage to get our hands on another script that could change our lives? I quickly jotted down my 10 rules on failure that I wanted to share with you all. These thoughts help me cope with the script I’ve been given, maybe it can help you with yours. I’m still learning as a go…

    1. Don’t worry about failure, or even think about failing. Those thoughts alone are enough to cripple you before you even start.

    2. Decide where you want your movie to end (set your end goals) and work backwards from there.

    3. Don’t measure others people advancement in life by their age. A lot of people always compare themselves to others by age. Age is truly just a number.

    4. Don’t be wrong and strong. You have to be willing to take in new information that will change your mind, paradigm or worldview.

    5. Always fight for accurate information. I’ve failed at some things because I was given the wrong information.

    6. LEARN THE GAME! This is probably the most important part of life. A lot of people just don’t ever want to learn the game, and this is the reason for most failures.

    7. Taking advice is probably one of the reasons most people fail, in my opinion. We often take advice from people who never really made anything happen for themselves. Those people usually have the most to say.

    8. SIMPLE STEPS. I’ve failed at a few things only because I did not take some simple steps. Sometimes it is as easy as just doing what you have to do when you have to do it. (Answer that email, go to that appointment, make that call, put in that work)

    9. Believe in clichés! The cliché that I believe in the most is positive affirmations. Repeat them to yourself 100 times a day. For example, say something like “great things are happening to me”. Once you start believing it, watch how it manifests in your day-to-day.

    10. I believe that in order to win, you have to help other people win. Don’t get caught up in your own success. Spend your time and energy also helping others achieve their goals. They win, you win and when they fail, you fail.

    a special thanks to MR.
