My Thoughts: A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO ENTERTAINING by Chef Eric Gonzalez.
Whether entertaining family, friends or that special lady in your life, conducting yourself as a gentleman is what will take your evening to the next level. To help ensure you are equipped with the best advice to turn a good night into an inspirational one, Chef Eric Gonzalez , executive chef at Auberge Saint-Gabriel in Montreal, developed the following gentleman entertaining tips.
A gentleman always offers his guests a welcome cocktail.
A gentleman says “please” and “thank you,” readily and often, regardless of to whom the gentleman is speaking.
A gentleman is always ready to offer a strong handshake.
A gentleman knows the most important part of a party is to be social and makes every effort to ensure his guests feel comfortable.
A gentleman does not concern himself with gossip – remember the old saying “loose lips sink ships”.
When sitting down for a meal, a gentleman should wait until all the guests are properly seated and ready to commence the meal before eating.
A gentleman always removes his headwear upon entering a building. Furthermore, he never keeps his hat on while at the dinner table.
A gentleman always wears something that makes him feel like a million bucks. If he doesn’t have any clothes that make him feel like a Hollywood star, he will go out and find some.
A gentleman always has a selection of drinks and food available for his guests. He ensures that all tastes and preferences are taken into account.
When escorting a lady to and from social events, a gentleman always offers her his arm.
Perhaps the greatest sign of respect, which is what a gentleman is all about, is being on time and punctual.
A gentleman’s attention should always be focused on the person with whom he is talking. A gentleman always looks at them when listening, as well as when he is in control of the conversation.
A gentleman does not shout across the dinner table – he concentrates on those closest to him, addressing those to his left and right.
A gentleman only talks once he has been formally introduced. If he feels like speaking to somebody, he will find a person that he has in common and arrange a proper introduction.
A gentleman is always a gracious host and thanks his guests for attending before they leave.
