  • MTTV: The Ever Green Brickworks – Walk With Me Timberland Project

From 1889 to the 1980’s the Don Valley Brick Works in Toronto was one of Canada’s pre-eminent brickyards. At its peak more than 43 million bricks a year were manufactured for use in the construction of homes and buildings across Canada. Many of Toronto’s most prominent buildings were made from Don Valley brick—Massey Hall and Old City Hall are just two examples. In the 1990’s the City and Toronto Regional Conservation Authority raised approximately $6 million to restore the site’s quarry as a park and natural area. Now known as Weston Family Quarry Garden, the park is an awe-inspiring haven for wildlife and naturalists alike at the heart of Toronto’s ravine system.

Evergreen Brick Works is also a community environmental centre that inspires and equips visitors to live, work and play more sustainably. Evergreen a national charity, has transformed the former Don Valley Brick Works from a collection of deteriorating heritage buildings into an international showcase for urban sustainability and green design. Striving to make cities more livable, by deepening the connection between people and nature, while empowering Canadians to take a hands-on approach to their urban environments.

These organizational values are what so closely align Evergreen with Timberland’s mission to equip people to make their difference in the world. Timberland works to make their own difference by promoting a sustainable business model; aggressive action to reduce their carbon footprint; products made and sold in a sustainable manner; and service in the communities where they live and work. The Evergreen Brick Works facility creates a foundation for this with embedded energy, water and waste savings across the 12-acre site; anchored by a LEED platinum building (LEED is an international standard for environmental excellence in construction) that was erected on the footprint of an existing building and home to the Timberland Canada offices.
