Looks: Masafumi Watanabe For Reef @reef84
Classic American surf brand, Reef, has collaborated with Japanese designer, Masafumi Watanabe to create a one-of-a kind collection. As with most surf brands, there seems to be a misconception that all they make is board shorts, sandals, and tank tops. However, that assumption is wrong. This 19-piece collection exhibits the expert tailoring and attention to detail the Mr. Watanabe is known for, while adhering to Reef’s surfing heritage.
The lookbook features world-class surfer Luke Davis and showcases the 1950’s California Surf inspiration with Tokyo serving as the backdrop. This marries the collaboration wonderfully and brings out the modernity that is synonymous with the city and the collection.
Take a closer look at the footwear collection below:
We celebrated the launch of the M.W for Reef collection at Brooklyn’s Kinfolk store and had a chance to chat with Mr. Watanabe about the collection. He noted that besides the 50’s surf inspiration, there were also workwear characteristics to the collection. These details include, front pockets on the oxford shirts and the durable but light material of the chino pants. Additionally, the corduroy upper on the sneakers and the vibram sole on the tanned leather flip-flops are a testament to the quality of the collection.
For those who may not be familiar with Mr. Watanabe, he is the designer behind Japanese fashion brand, Bedwin & The Heartbreakers. The brand is particularly known for its eclectic aesthetic because it draws inspiration from multiple sources. Therefore, it seems fitting that collaboration between the designer and the surf brand should come about so fluidly.
We hope you guys enjoy the collection just as much as we do!
