After three years of success, they are going into 2016 with continued enthusiasm! To stir excitement for the upcoming championship, they have brought The Open’s famous trophy, the Claret Jug, to Canada. We had the oppurtunity to see the century old award and taste some of Glenmorangie’s classic whiskeys here in Montreal.
Introduced in 1873, the Claret Jug is made entirely out of silver and it is tradition for the winner of The Open to fill it with the drink of their choice. On the base of the Jug, the names of the past winners are engraved. Some of the The Open’s famed Claret Jug winner’s over the years include Jack Nicklaus’s titanic battle with Doug Sanders at St. Andrews in 1970 to Phil Mickelson’s birdy-fuelled back nine at Muirfield in 2013. The current championship holder is Zach Johnson, who won the 144th Open at the Old Course at St. Andrews in 2015.
This year, the 145th Open championship will be played at the Royal Troon in Scotland.
Here is what we tasted from Glenmorangie! Our personal favourite was the Nectar d’Or, which had a balanced taste of sweet and spicy. The whiskey fell warmly on our palettes and it did not overwhelm our senses. The French casks used to create the Nectar d’Or complements the whiskey so well.
Original, 10 years’ tasting notes:
Aroma: The scent of citrus and ripening peaches is softened by the aroma of vanilla.
Taste: First, vanilla is detected on the tongue before it ripples along the palate bringing a burst of flowery fruitiness.
Finish: About a minute after tasting, you are left with a clean and and salving aftertaste with hints of orange and peach.
Nectar d’Or, 12 years’ tasting notes:
Aroma: Lime and orange rind, sultanas and dates give a rich fruity flavour laced with tantalising spices of coconut and nutmeg.
Taste: Ginger, nutmeg and toasted almonds bring a deep, warming taste interwoven with a syrupy lemon meringue and honeycomb middle.
Finish: Long and lusciously sweet finish with lemon zest, white chocolate, vanilla and traces of ginger and nutmeg.
Lasanta, 12 years’ tasting notes:
Aroma: Warm spices mix with smooth chocolate covered raisins, honeycomb and caramel toffee.
Taste: Deliciously sweet sherry flavoured sultanas, orange segments, walnuts and butterscotch combine to create complex warm spices.
