Just like the Chuck Taylor II, Converse has looked to its longstanding heritage in sport when it came to the All Star Modern’s overall design.
To imbue us with a sense of what modernity represents, we joined Converse at the recently renovated Whitney Museum of American Art. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the museum in 1931 and it houses primarily 20th and 21st century works of art. Its new location in the Meatpacking District of New York City was completed in 2015 and its strong asymmetrical design is contemporary but also industrial to reflect the districts industrious history. The atmosphere of the space and the works of art that hung from its walls inspired us. As we explored floor after floor, we saw abstract pieces sharing the room with more traditional portraitures. We saw a fusing of old and new, playing with new materials like plastic and metals, the techniques of yesteryear but the social commentary was of this time.
Before we were introduced to the All Star Modern, Converse Archivist, Sam Smallidge, provided a quick history lesson. He began by saying “Before changing the name to Chuck Taylor in 1934, the shoe was called the Non-Skid and it was primarily used for training.” He elaborated on some of the features that we overlook today but were revolutionary for its time by stating: “The ankle patch was designed to provide ankle support, the eyelets allowed for ventilation, and the diamond patterned sole gave the necessary grip for the athletes.” Fast forward to 2016, the All Star has undergone another transformation.
To pay homage to the past and look to the future is what Converse wanted to achieve with the All Star Modern. Its silhouette is unmistakably like the Chuck Taylor All Star but the way in which it is put together is new. The canvas is replaced with Nike’s Hyperfuse technology, rendering it light, breathable, plus it looks undoubtedly futuristic. While the diamond patterned insole serves as a nod to its early design. Additional components include a TPU-fused overlaid toecap, neoprene split tongue and lining. The phylon outsole is also new and now the classic striped bottom is now a flush, curved and comfortable piece, unlike the Chuck Taylor of old, which was arguably uncomfortable, but if you’re a Converse purist. You don’t complain about that.
We sat down with Ryan Case, the Global Footwear Product Director of Converse and asked him a few questions regarding the All Star Modern:
The Chuck Taylor All Star hasn’t been updated in a very long time, now we have the Chuck Taylor II and on June 16th, we have the All Star Modern. Why is Converse following up so quickly with a new sneaker?
RC: When the consumer started asking for more, something new and something different from us as a brand, we had to listen to them and it started with the Chuck II and we also looked toward the future, and that’s how the All Star Modern came about.
Did you guys have any worries that the Chuck II and the All Star Modern would look the same?
RC: Yeah, they were some worries but we have great designers at Converse and they were strategic on how the shoes can both live separately from each other. The obvious move others would think we would do is to create another Chuck but with the All Star Modern, we looked at a the time frame, shortly after 1934, took cues from that and also took the opportunity to show the future of the brand.
What is your favourite of the colour way of the All Star Modern?
RC: I’m a high top guy and I personally like the grey and white colourway.
