About This Work
On Days Like These (2025) is A new limited edition print by Marcus Troy from his STEUPS series — a body of work grounded in everyday gestures that carry unspoken weight.
Four women stand shoulder to shoulder against a raw, sand-toned ground. Their faces are partially obscured, flattened into fields of deep umber and crimson, interrupted only by flashes of gold at the mouth — small, luminous interruptions that suggest speech withheld, laughter restrained, or words sharpened but unspoken. Their expressions are unreadable, yet unmistakable.
Each figure carries her own visual rhythm. Angular skirts fracture into planes of magenta, violet, coral, teal, and white. Paint drips fall deliberately from hems and torsos, refusing polish. Hands rest on hips. One leg steps forward. Sandals ground the bodies in everyday familiarity. The silhouettes are slightly elongated, slightly strained — poised between composure and confrontation.
The composition compresses space. The neutral backdrop flattens perspective, pushing the viewer into direct proximity with the figures. There is no depth to escape into — only presence. Bold color blocks collide with exposed underpainting, visible revisions, and gestural marks that remain unapologetically unresolved. The tension is structural.
Within STEUPS, the exhale — the subtle Caribbean gesture of dismissal, disbelief, or endurance — becomes a visual language. It holds contradiction: frustration and humor, fatigue and pride, visibility and erasure. The gold details act as quiet signals of value and interior richness, even when faces are masked or reduced.
This work is not about spectacle. It is about recognition.
It captures the psychological posture of people who carry themselves with dignity while navigating systems that were never designed for them.
The longer you sit with it, the more the silence speaks.
