The all-new, 2019 Lexus UX is the one of the best premium crossovers for the city dweller. Its overall size, sportiness, and styling fits right into the lifestyle with its hatchback like silhouette, razor-edged LED lights, and blacked-out spindle grille. The UX deserves a look as it drives by you, especially when it is adorned with Lexus’ iconic F Sport badge.
Lexus’ new 2.0-liter inline 4 cylinder engine encased within the UX provides a modest 168-horsepower, while delivering satisfiable fuel economy. Also available is a hybrid engine that confidently delivers slightly more horsepower, topping up at 175. This option is great for the efficient and environment-minded individual. Both engines are linked to a CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) that ensures the UX switching gears optimally.
On the road the UX feels smooth and its low center of gravity makes it cunning on the corners. This is made possible by way of Lexus’ active cornering assist, which is integrated with the vehicle’s stability control system. It helps the UX follow a tight line by applying some brake control on the inside wheels and mitigating understeer while turning.
All UX models are equipped with Lexus Safety Suite + 2.0, an integrated suite of active safety features that works to help with the driver’s overall awareness. It includes a pre-collision warning with pedestrian and bicycle detention, adaptive radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, and auto high-beam.
The interior features a nice mix of materials such as a leather wrapped seats and steering wheel, handsome knobs, and brushed metal. The standout has to be the instrument panel that is inspired by the handmade Japanese “Washi” paper. The overlapping folds on the panel can be likened to the process of creating origami. When it comes to cargo capacity, the UX’s rear seats split 60/40 allows you to pack the all the essentials for a weekend getaway. Or your camera gear (including stands, umbrellas, and tripods), if you’re in the creative industry like us.
The finishing touches include a 7 or a 10-inch display with Lexus’ Enform 2.0 infotainment system. Enform allows you to plot destinations, traffic incidents, and more via your smartphone. If you’re reliant on your iOS device there is Apple CarPlay available at your finger tips.
The 2019 Lexus UX is a nice introduction to luxury that Lexus has to offer.
