"Spearheaded by artist Swizz Beatz, the initiative aims to bring to blur the often rigid lines between fine and contemporary art"
During the first week of December, creatives from all over the world converge to Miami, Florida for Art Basel. Inaugurated in 1970, the five day event is a showcase for contemporary artwork by established and emerging artists from all over the world.
After a global tour to Shanghai and Berlin, we joined Bacardi at the No Commission Art Fair at the Soho Studios in Wynwood for two days to take in the immersive installations that they have brought to the Sunshine State. Spearheaded by artist Swizz Beatz, the initiative aims to bring to blur the often rigid lines between fine and contemporary art. Moreover, a hundred-percent of the proceeds that are collected are given to the directly to the artists. This year’s theme was dubbed “Island Might” and it speaks to the potential, power, past and future of the Caribbean and its people. Hanging upon the walls was artwork from thirty artists that have examined the many facets of the Island culture ranging from its traditions, landscapes and faces.
During our first day at the space, we attended the “Future of Creativity” panel hosted and moderated by Swizz Beatz and Brooklyn Museum Direction Anne Pasternak. Among those in attendance was Virgil Abloh, Kimberly Drew, Nora Khan and Carmen Aguilar Y Wedge with the topics of discussion ranging from taking social responsibility, the impact of social media, corporate accountability and the role creatives play in today’s culture. The evening was capped off with performances from LEIKELI47, Aine Zion, and DJ Runna.
The following day was spent taking in more of the artwork. Some of our favourites included Michael Vasquez’s “Gimnasio de Boxeo (Ninos de Cuba)” and the work of Alex Gardner’s “You’re Hindering My Nonchalance” paintings. The evening transformed into another night of performances from artist hip-hop artist Busta Rhymes, reggae artist Chronixx and a DJ set by Swizz Beatz.
