Stars were projected on the walls of the atrium where we were spending an evening with Huawei. They were celebrating the launch of the newest smartphone, the Nova Plus; a device that offers combines functionality with a premium aesthetic. As a brand, Huawei’s growth and presence is becoming undeniable, and they know it. So much so that they brought Astronaut, Col. Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space, as a special guest for the evening. His successes as a space cowboy serve as a sort of metaphor for their current and future ambitions, which is to go beyond.

When the time comes to upgrade, there’s an overwhelming amount of options when it comes to picking out a smartphone. This is especially true for Android users. One of our favourite devices that we’ve spent some time with is Huawei’s NOVA Plus. It features a 5.5-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 pixel display, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, as well as an expandable micro SD card slot that provides up to 128GB. What’s more is that the Snapdragon 625 processor provides high-end processing combines with minimal battery drain. Which means you’ll be able to stay connected without worrying about killing your battery.

If you’re interested in mobile photography, there’s a fantastic 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. Which means you’ll get steadier shots if you’re pausing to snap a picture on the go. Moreover, it’s capable of capturing vivid 4K videos. At the front is an 8-megapixel camera, which works well for the selfie lovers out there. This is all encased in a brushed aluminum metal body that is accented with a discreet rear camera and a fingerprint sensor. At the front, the screen showcases a clean gloss with “Huawei” branded across.

When it comes time to live with the device, we particularly appreciate the straightforward approach to the interface. There’s also a myriad of battery and storage saving features that keep you engaged with the NOVA Plus. This prevents you from cluttering your device with unnecessary applications, pictures, and files. With that being said, it’s also very easy to navigate and personalize the device to your liking.

The NOVA Plus is available now at Rogers, Virgin Mobile and Fido.
