The amazing hotel I blogged about when I was in LA is set to open its doors in New York City this week! The Andaz boutique hotel will be opening this week on 5th avenue in the former Tommy Hilfiger headquaters.
“The hotel is the third opening this year for rapidly-expanding Andaz, which says that it wants to make guests feel like they’ve been welcomed into a friend’s home, rather than a hotel.”
“Like other Andaz properties, the 184-room Andaz Fifth Avenue doesn’t feature a reception desk, instead preferring to check people in over a drink in the lounge or whilst walking to their room.”
The interior, designed by Tony Chi, is also designed to add a home-like feeling to the space, with the designer opting for exposed pipe ceilings, open kitchens and residential furniture, as well as sash windows that “pay homage to New York City’s pre-war apartments and factories”.
Many rooms have floor to ceiling windows and all offer marble bathrooms with dual sinks, rainfall shower heads and a porcelain footbath in the shower – perfect for refreshing the feet after a hard day pounding the New York streets.
Guests can choose between the locally sourced shop, a 38-seat restaurant and a cellar bar for food and refreshment options, whilst events can be held in “Apartment 2E”, a catered space designed to resemble an apartment where guests can mingle with the chefs or access the hotel’s open-air courtyard.

Gucci and Fendi are launching their first full children’s collections.
Gucci presented its Gucci Kids line at its historical Firenze boutique during the Pitti Bimbo international childrenswear fair last week.
The line, aimed at children from newborn to age eight includes shoes, dresses, accessories and sunglasses created by Gucci star designer Frida Giannini.
Historical family fashion house Fendi, owned by French luxury group LVMH, had already presented an incomplete line for babies and is now fielding a collection designed by Fendi heiress Silvia Venturina Fendi at Pitti.
The collection is a partnership with Italian company Simonetta, which has already worked in the past with designer Roberto Cavalli on children lines.

Italian designer Giorgio Armani on Tuesday opened his first signature hotel in the world’s tallest tower in the Gulf emirate of Dubai.
$11 000 a night for suites.
Designed in plain shades of black and brown, it occupies space on the ground floor of Burj Khalifa and on floors one to eight, with the luxury suites on floors 38 and 39.
On levels nine to 16 is the Armani Residence, apartments designed by Giorgio Armani and sold to private buyers.
The hotel has no paintings on the walls in an attempt to “keep it simple and elegant,” employees said on Tuesday.
Hotel staff said a night at the best suite — the Armani Dubai suite, and it was already occupied on Tuesday — costs 40,000 dirhams (10,900 dollars).
In addition to fine restaurants, the hotel also has a spa, but this is restricted to 300 “Armani-style” members only.
In the Armani Prive lounge, the lighting gleams from marble tables and the largest LCD television in the world — showing Armani fashion shows. The lowest rate for a table in the lounge is 3,000 dirhams (816 dollars).

Some answers from last nights Twitter conversations:

“Leica recently launched a new initiative titled CITIES.PEOPLE.PERSPECTIVES which brings together a variety of photographic authors from around the globe. The goal of the project is to offer a look into the respective city and travels of the people involved. The concept is to provide a visual experience beyond the trite postcard imagery we are so often encounter. The site is integrated with Google Maps so you can get a better understanding of exactly where each shot took place. The list of photographers include William Yan, Sevada A. & Philipp S., Anh Phan, Nii Obodai, TK and Tomohiro Fujii. The site will be updated on a regular basis and can be seen here.“
