Live From The Berry: Get Your Grammy!

January 13th, 2010

How do you separate yourselves from others? Get yourself a Grammy!

Some of you are probably thinking I’m crazy right now but I want you guys to hear me out. It’s a known fact that you can only get a Grammy if you’re in the music business or affiliated with it but I am talking about getting a Grammy figuratively speaking.

What I really mean is get “your Grammy” get the highest accolades you can in you field, domain, or in your profession. Those are the things that separate you from others… I believe that artist strive for a Grammy to really leave their mark in history and separate themselves from the other artist. I believe all people should strive for those accolades.

These accomplishments are usually very personal and not for bragging rights even though sometimes you may achieve them in the public eye.

Are you following? It seems like everyone is following everyone else. Everyone wants to be an artist, blogger, photographer, tastemaker, and journalist, radio personality, magazine editor the list goes on. If everyone wants to be the same how does one separate themselves? I believe its accolades or personal achievements that separate you from the rest of the people in your lane.

Whatever the equivalent is to a Grammy that is what I am taking about. It could be as simple as a university degree, it can be a collaboration with a major brand, an interview with “a hard to get” artist. These accolades are the things you need under your belt to separate yourself from the masses. I think the more accolades you achieve the more opportunities automatically come your way. I was really proud when Angie Martinez from Hot 97 got invited to the White House, I mean she has come such a long way as radio personality, I think those kind of accomplishments really separates her from  the other RP out there.

You want to become a member of the “accolade” club…I’m sure there is a secret Grammy club or Oscar club. Birds of a feather flock together, when you win, you will be surrounding with winners.

As a blogger, there are always accolades or “Grammy’s” I am working towards achieving. They are personal goals I set up for myself as benchmarks and to measure my accomplishments as a blogger.

I hope you guys can do the same for whatever field you are in!

I’m going in for the KILL word to B.E and La Roux

Just my thoughts!

Peace

Live From The Berry- What Have You Done?

January 02nd, 2010

I believe that people feel a lot more comfortable; when they can justify your successes, I think it helps them sleep better at night. When people can explain to someone else what you’re about, they somehow feel like they have it all figured out and it makes them feel great (weird). If people don’t know or can’t explain to themselves what you’ve done to get to where you are, I think that is when the hate starts to develop.

1 of my favorite artist Drake, said it best on Money to blow: Look at where I landed, you would think I planned it, I’m just doing me and you will never understand it” I think that line sums up this post, but I will continue.

I think it’s part of human nature to want understanding…and when we don’t get it, we create it (understanding). I once read on twitter: “You have to believe in LUCK, how else would haters justify your success?”

The question often comes up, what has he or she done to deserve this or that? The real question you should be asking yourself is what have you done? or better yet what haven’t you done to deserve something?

Nothing is really deserved, a lot of work and energy goes into getting things accomplished.

I believe some people are born with undeniable skill and they are destined to make it or be successful and some others just work really hard to be something. Madonna was just Louise Ciccone before she became Madonna, as we know her. Jay-z was just Shawn Carter and Michael Jordan was just a kid named Michael. At some point in their lives, they were nobodies and not “deserving” of anything, but they started somewhere and it led them to where they are today.

Some of you might be familiar with a guy named Levi Maestro who is making waves in this lifestyle industry. I often get asked what does he do? How come he does this and that? I don’t know what or how he does what he does…sure I can think of something if I wanted to, but that is not important to me. I don’t need to justify his successes all I know is that I recognize a dream chaser when I see one and I have to protect those individuals, because they are just like me. DREAM CHASERS.

Not everyone is going to give you a play by play of their journey to success, power to the best marketers!

You don’t have to be a fan of the work, or even like what a person tweets or blogs about, but you have to respect the work and the “doing” these people do to make a name for themselves as long as it’s positive.

To become something all you have to do is be born….the rest might be up to you. We are all something in the making if we want to be. So when people ask you what has he or she done or what have you done to get this or that, just tell them that you are starting somewhere and any accolades for starting is better that waiting to start. You would think people are really born stars or born successful, well I mean very few are but we can’t control where we are born and in what circumstances but we can all start to make a name for ourselves if we want to.

In 2010 let’s not ask what have they done to deserve a Grammy nomination, a record deal, a Nike Bespoke, a cover of a magazine, a shoe collaboration or that special someone, Let’s ask what can we do to achieve the things we want out of life!

Just my thoughts!
